Welcome to the 23rd WFSF Conference 2019

This is the first WFSF Congress to be held in Latin America and Mexico will have the privilege of receiving people from all over the world who belong to this diverse and plural Federation. This year's event will have verification at the Maximum House of Studies of the country, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

UNAM is declared a cultural heritage by UNESCO, an organization of which WFSF has been a partner since 1974.

Just as there is a wide range of futures, such as people on the planet, their uses are also varied. Futures concern us all. From those who make decisions in the highest spheres of power, those who only handle quantitative methods to investigate, those who teach time in various ways, to those who love to create fantastic and creative stories about becoming.

This event will analyze an overview of these uses: business as usual or traditional, our duty as cosmopolitan citizens or planetary uses, future and beyond or creative uses, futures studies as a whole or holistic uses.

Experiences will be exchanged through workshops, conferences and posters, receiving a diversity of people of different nationalities, professions, ages, ways of thinking, lifestyles, points of view. Multiple realities, multiple futures. More than just a network of contacts, the WFSF is a planetary social fabric that has been a meeting point for people studying futures since its foundation, with people truly interested in visualizing and building a better place for the entire human race, using the futures It becomes a matter of life.

Themes and subtopics

USES OF THE FUTURES. Business as usual or Traditional uses

Some of the most widespread applications of activities related to the future are strategic prospective planning, consultancies on futures and measurements, education and training of futurists through courses and in Universities. Therefore, we can find a rich literature with many cases that cover a broad spectrum ranging from uncertainty management, crisis and conflict, as well as rapid response mechanisms, and long-term visions.

OUR DUTY AS GLOBAL CITIZENS or Cosmopolitan Uses / Planetary Uses

Better futures are the constant concerns that all humanity desires. The great challenges cannot be addressed only from a local or regional perspective, they also need to be integrated into a planetary approach, such as the serious problem of water, the environment, food, energy resources, migration. However, there are other questions that can be better addressed at regional, national or local levels such as poverty, inequality and security that require a multi-layered approach. In any case, all this helps us to understand the relevance of our conscience as citizens of the world.

FUTURES AND BEYOND or Creative Uses

Futures studies have been emphasized with a scientific and empirical approach that is now insufficient. However, there is growing evidence that we have to look back at the creative imagination of writers and creators who are opening other fields with new ways of knowing and exploring futures. Imagination and intuition must be actively used to investigate the future as it is already being done by many institutions that have even hired science fiction writers to build futures from the fragments that already exist in current reality.

STUDIES OF THE FUTURE AS AN ALL or Holistic Uses

Richard Slaughter has already declared that futures are, above all, an intellectual domain. Therefore, they must be approached comprehensively; They cannot be limited to the application of tools, but human beings must aspire to be prospective beings. Ultimately, we must aim for all humanity to reach a minimum level of future literacy, so that we can all participate in a real exercise in debate about how the future of the future and the human communities of tomorrow can be.

The Congress Program will include a variety of spaces and moments to address the issue from different angles: opening speeches, plenary and creative parallel sessions, round tables and workshops. But it will also provide an open space for participants who can connect informally and directly.

The Congress is bilingual Spanish / English. Abstracts and presentations in both languages are accepted.
